The organ in the Schlosskirche Varel, built by Karl Schuke in 1978, is housed in a historic case with elements dating back to 1615. The original organ was crafted by Christian Bockelmann, and its elaborate facade, featuring lions holding the coats of arms of Count Anton II of Delmenhorst and his wife Sybille Elisabeth, was created by the sculptor Ludwig Münstermann. Over the centuries, the organ underwent several rebuilds and modifications by notable organ builders, including Johann Sieburg in 1639, Johann Lübben and Dietrich Busch in the 18th century, and Philipp Furtwängler in 1861.
The current instrument by Schuke, while retaining the historic case, features modern technological updates, including a Rückpositiv and a setzer system added during a 2003 cleaning by the Schuke firm. With 47 stops distributed across three manuals and pedal, the organ offers a broad tonal palette suitable for a wide range of musical styles. Its mechanical and electric action ensures precise control, and the instrument’s detailed restoration honors its historical significance while enhancing its functionality for contemporary use.
