The grand Kuhn organ is the jewel of the Philharmonie Essen. It was inaugurated on September 24, 2004, just a few months after the concert hall's opening. Regarding this masterpiece with its 4,502 pipes, the Swiss organ-building firm Kuhn writes:
"When constructing the new concert hall organ for the Philharmonie Essen, we had to meet a wide range of demands. The instrument needed to reflect the international and sophisticated character of the venue while staying true to the fundamental principles of traditional organ building. Additionally, we wanted to incorporate the ideas of the musicians while remaining faithful to our own ideals. This symphonic instrument, featuring mechanical action and 4,502 pipes, successfully unites all these goals. As an outstanding partner to the orchestra, this organ enriches a wide spectrum of musical styles with depth and fullness of sound.
The organ’s façade is not tied to a specific tonal design, allowing for certain artistic freedoms, which were fully explored in close collaboration with the architects. A special place was given to the ‘Tuba’ stop, which gleams horizontally beneath the balcony. To optimally meet the demands of modern concert performances, the instrument is also equipped with an additional mobile console.
Thanks to balancers and Kuhn levers, the high wind pressures are maintained at a comfortably playable level. Two additional octave couplers enhance the effectiveness of the swell division, ensuring the best possible use of the organ’s tonal resources. Unlike a church organ, where tonal gradation follows a different hierarchy, the manual divisions here are arranged with ensemble performance in mind; scaling and voicing are tailored for orchestral integration.
What initially existed only as an idea—sketched on paper and envisioned in our minds—was brought to life through the tireless craftsmanship of our organ builders, pipe makers, and carpenters. They have paved the way for artistic flights, moments of elegance, and unforgettable performances."
