The organ was constructed by Carsten Lund Orgelbyggeri, based in Copenhagen, in accordance to Lambert Daniel Kastens' specifications from 1724 and was completed in 1995.

The organ's history bears significance: it was first carried over from the Amalienborg Palace Chapel. In 1722, a contract was drafted with Lambert Daniel Kastens for a two-manual organ with 30 stops, which was later extended to 38 stops. The organ was finalised in 1724/25.

In 1860, a new work by Knud Olsen was created using the old casing, resulting in a three-manual organ with 35 stops. This was followed by repairs and expansions in 1923 and 1948 by Starup & Søn to a three-manual organ with 50 stops, which also involved pneumatisation and the removal of the rear positive (either in 1923 or as early as 1860).

In 1995 Carsten Lund built a work that stylistically and structurally emulates the Kastens organ, and the rear positive was restored.
