The organ, built in 1898 by the workshop of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and Charles Mutin, was privately owned until the 1990s. It was then acquired, restored, and offered for sale by the Strasbourg organ builder Daniel Kern. In 1999, the cathedral chapter purchased the instrument.
Originally a house organ, a type of which Cavaillé-Coll produced several, few remain today. This particular organ is the only original and fully preserved Cavaillé-Coll organ in Germany. The display pipes are non-sounding, and the entire pipework is housed in a swell box. The sound is overall very mild, restrained, and pleasant.
