The organ of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church in Montepulciano is a historical instrument, noted for its unique construction using cypress wood pipes. Built by Agostino Buratti between 1713 and 1717, the organ has a rich history and underwent several modifications over the centuries. Initially, a smaller organ was donated in 1600 by Vincenzo Salimbeni, and a new organ was constructed by Alamanno Contucci in 1765-1766, encased in a baroque-style wooden case by sculptor Carlo Maderno Speroni. The organ was further expanded by Antonio Buratti, who added significant features including a Cornetto and Voce umana.
Throughout its history, the organ experienced numerous changes, including damage during World War II and subsequent restorations. The most notable restoration was by Pier Paolo Donati from 1980 to 1983, which reinstated its original mechanical system and removed later additions, culminating in a rededication concert in 1983. The organ, now housed in its 1765-1766 baroque case, features a single manual with 45 keys and a 9-note pedalboard, and maintains its historic cypress wood pipes. The transmission system is entirely mechanical, with a mesotonic tuning and a wind pressure of 38 mm water column.
