The organ at St. Nicolai Church in Lüneburg, built in 1899 by the firm Furtwängler & Hammer, is a significant example of German High Romantic organ craftsmanship. The instrument, originally featuring a pneumatic action, underwent several modifications throughout the 20th century influenced by the "Orgelbewegung" (organ reform movement). These changes, which included alterations to the tonal structure and reductions in wind pressure, were carried out in 1930, 1946, and 1955.
In 1980, the organ was renovated by the Walcker company, which installed an electric action and a new freestanding console. However, by the late 1990s, there was a growing appreciation for the original Romantic instruments. Between 2000 and 2002, the organ was restored to its original 1899 condition by the Lenter GmbH company. This restoration included re-establishing the pneumatic action, restoring the original console, and reactivating the historical features, thus preserving the instrument's authentic Romantic character.
