The organ of St. John's Church in Cēsis, with 3 manuals and 41 registers, is the largest instrument in Vidzeme region of Latvia.
The organ has a suitable arrangement for playing romantic music and a prospectus made in the Art Nouveau style, which is rare in Latvia, with an image of Martin Luther in the central part.
The current organ was built in 1907, but due to disputes, it was not consecrated until March 9, 1908. In 1913, the air supply was automated.
In 1944, during an air raid on the church, the organs were also damaged. The organ pipes of the prospect (holes, dents) suffered, and the console was significantly damaged. About half of the keys of the first manual were broken. Subsequently, extensive repairs were carried out, and a record was found inside the prospect: "After bomb damage, the organ was repaired by organist J. Lošards (Lošaks?) in Cēsis in October 1945."
In the second half of the 1980s, the plastic labels on the stop knobs were damaged: the top part was peeled off, and large paper numbers were pasted on. In the 1980s, new labels were also pasted onto the pedal keyboard. In 1997, the console was restored: the worn felt on the manual and pedal keys was replaced, the covering of all pneumatic pouches was replaced, and other necessary work was carried out. The restoration was done by A. Melbārdis, V. Ilsums, and M. Dzenītis. Around the beginning of this century, the installation of central heating solved the problem of high humidity, but as a result, the instrument, which had become accustomed to high humidity, became unplayable. The entire restoration of the instrument was carried out by the "Melbārža Music Instrument Workshop" from 2005 to 2007.
