The Peternell organ workshop was founded in 1847 by brothers Carl (1815-1877) and August Peternell (1836-1909) and remained in operation until 1909. It was one of the most significant organ-building firms in Thuringia, producing at least 50 new organs during its existence. The largest of these was installed in the Stadtkirche Jena in 1855, featuring 45 registers. Peternell organs are renowned for their particularly fine, colorful, and characterful sound. The workshop's mastery in voicing was highly praised, with the organ expert Johann Gottlob Töpfer noting that no other organ builder in the region could match Peternell's skill in this area.
