The company Freiburger Orgelbau Späth, located in March in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, specializes in organ building. It has a rich history dating back to 1862 when Alois Späth founded an organ workshop in Ennetach. His sons, Franz Xaver and Albert, continued the business under the name Gebr. Späth Orgelbau. The next generation, represented by Franz Xaver's sons Karl and August, took over the operations. In 1964, August and his son Hartwig separated from the Ennetach workshop and established Freiburger Orgelbau August Späth, Orgelbaumeister, in Freiburg. The company was renamed Freiburger Orgelbau Hartwig und Tilmann Späth OHG in 2008 and is currently managed by Hartwig Späth and his son Tilmann Späth, representing the fourth and fifth generations of the family.

Hartwig Späth began his training in organ building with his father in 1958, followed by studies in industrial engineering at the Technical University of Munich, where he graduated as a Diplom-Wirtschaftsingenieur in 1965. He completed his master craftsman certification in 1970 and took over the business after his father's death. Tilmann Späth, born in 1984 in Freiburg, trained as an organ builder with the Rensch company and worked with his father before passing his master craftsman exam in Ludwigsburg in 2008. Since then, Tilmann has been a co-owner of the company and has served on the board of the German Association of Organ Builders since 2015.
