The organ at Georgskirche in Weener underwent several significant transformations and restorations over the centuries. Initially built by Arp Schnitger and his son Franz Caspar in 1709/10, the organ featured two manuals and an attached pedal, with 22 registers. Johann Friedrich Wenthin expanded and repaired the organ from 1779 to 1782, adding a third manual, freestanding pedal towers, and relocating it to a new gallery in front of the chancel. Various repairs and modifications followed in the 19th century by craftsmen like Herman Eberhard Freytag and Johann Gottfried Rohlfs. However, a critical assessment in 1864 led to a major overhaul by the Gebrüder Rohlfing workshop from 1872 to 1877, removing the Brustwerk and relocating the Rückpositiv. Further alterations occurred in the early 20th century, including a restoration by Alfred Führer in 1952, where the 18th-century disposition was restored using later pipes.
In the 1970s, extensive restoration work was undertaken by Hendrik Jan Vierdag and completed by Jürgen Ahrend from 1978 to 1983. This restoration aimed to reconstruct various elements of the organ, including the wind supply, pedal keyboard, and mechanical components, with a focus on historical accuracy. Ahrend reconstructed the organ's original features, including manual stops and tremulants, using authentic methods and materials, with additional reconstruction work on the wind system and key mechanisms.
