The organ at St. Bartholomäus in Mittelnkirchen has a rich history beginning in the 16th century with the construction of a one-manual organ by an unknown builder. In 1688, Arp Schnitger modified the instrument, adding a Brustwerk with eight stops and expanding the Hauptwerk with 16' and 8' Trumpet stops.

Between 1750 and 1753, Johann Matthias Schreiber further modified the organ by adding an independent pedal and constructing a new case for the entire instrument. In 1772, Jürgen Dietrich Fortriede thoroughly overhauled the organ.

In 1844, Philipp Furtwängler made further changes during an overhaul. The organ underwent a major repair by Furtwängler & Hammer in 1936. Paul Ott reduced the wind pressure and the pipe cuts in 1956 during another overhaul.

The organ was restored to its 1753 state by Rudolf von Beckerath in 1991, and in 2011, Bartelt Immer conducted another restoration, adding two previously missing reed stops.
