The St. Marien und Bartholomäus Church in Harsefeld has a rich history of organ building dating back to the early 16th century, with elements of the original organ still preserved today. The current organ, built by Friedrich Altendorf in 1860/61, includes two manuals, a pedal, and 21 registers, incorporating some of the older pipework. Altendorf's organ represents a backward-looking approach to organ building, drawing inspiration from earlier builders such as the Bethmann family and Christian Vater, who were themselves influenced by the famous Arp Schnitger.
Over the 20th century, the organ underwent significant changes, leading to a deterioration in its sound and playability. By the late 1990s, efforts were made to restore the organ to a better condition, leading to a comprehensive restoration by Rowan West in 2001/2002. This restoration sought to integrate historical elements from the 16th, 18th, and 19th centuries into a cohesive instrument, maintaining the organ's historical integrity while enhancing its functionality and sound quality.
