The current organ at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh was built in 1992 by the Austrian firm Rieger Orgelbau, with input from renowned organists Herrick Bunney and Peter Hurford. Housed in the South Transept, the organ features a striking Austrian oak case designed by Douglas Laird, blending contemporary craftsmanship with architectural harmony.
Though largely a new instrument, the organ retains select elements from its predecessor (a 1940 Willis III), specifically the Pedal Open Wood 16′ and the Bombarde 32′. Additionally, the lowest seven pipes of the original 32′ Double Open Wood were preserved and now form the bass of the Untersatz 32′, with the remaining metal pipes incorporated into the organ’s façade—linking past and present in both sound and design.
