The Gospel Organ (Cornu Evangelii) of the basilica is a historically significant instrument built in 1596 by Baldassarre Malamini. It is located on a gallery to the left of the altar and features twelve stops on a single manual with a coupled pedal. The organ’s mechanical action is original and has survived centuries of use. Despite several alterations over time, it was restored in 1986 by the Tamburini organ building company.
The Gospel Organ includes early baroque characteristics, such as a Voce Umana 8′ stop and multiple flute and mutation ranks. The manual compass follows a shortened layout (C1–c3, with broken octaves), and the pedal is coupled directly. The sound concept is built around colorful solo voices and a full Ripieno ensemble, activated via the “Tiratutti del Ripieno” stop. With its preserved pipework and original action, it remains one of the oldest playable organs in Italy.
