The pipe organ was constructed by Peter Lasur in 1504. The Gothic main casing of the organ (Gothic block work) is attributed to him. In 1573, an addition of Rückpositiv or rear position was made in the Renaissance style by Hans Köster. In 1673, Joachim Richborn expanded and remodeled the organ, during which the two pedal towers and the Brustwerk (chest work) were added, bringing the total number of registers to 51.

From 1739 to 1741, Christoph Julius Bünting further remodeled the organ by moving the Brustwerk as Oberwerk behind the main casing. In 1894, Marcussen renovated the organ; he cleaned the RP and HW, built a new swellable OW and pedal, both with pneumatic action, and eliminated the short octave in all works.

Karl Kemper initiated a significant renovation (or "renewal", returning the organ to a baroque style) in 1935 upon the request of Hugo Distler, who served as the church's organist from 1931 to 1937. During World War II, the organ was put into storage.

Between 1957 and 1965, reconstruction was done by Karl Kemper, which added a fourth manual keyboard to the instrument. A comprehensive restoration and recovery operation was carried out from 1981 to 1984 by the Berlin organ-building workshop Karl Schuke, during which a Schwellwerk with romantic voices was installed.

In 2012/13, the wind system was renewed, cleaned, and retoned by Flentrop (Zaandam/NL), in collaboration with the Rudolf von Beckerath workshop, while a Untersatz 32 was installed.
