The organ was crafted by an anonymous builder in 1467/1515 and initially created as a one-manual swallow nest organ housing a Gothic main section. It was expanded in 1636/7 by Friedrich Stellwagen to include a chair organ, a chest organ, and a small pedal organ. During the 19th century, several of the organ's key sections were replaced. In 1935, the mechanism was renewed and the pedalwork was extended by E. Kemper of Lübeck, under Hugo Distler. In 1942, the organ was relocated for safety. After World War II in 1946, a full rebuilding of the organ was undertaken. There was a significant intervention in 1961, and it underwent restoration by the Hillebrand Brothers from Altwarmbüche in 1977/78.
