The organ was constructed by Mutin Cavaillé-Coll in the 1890s. It was initially built for the church of Tourcoing in the Nord department, former region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. After the closure of the church in 1995, the organ was purchased by the organ maker Kern from Strasbourg. It was finally sold to Kiel in 2003 and installed as a choir organ in St. Nikolai.
